Saving our precious wildlife - Author Sessions

Through the power of storytelling, it is my ambition to inspire as many children as possible to:

  1. develop a lifelong love of the natural world around them
  2. celebrate the natural behaviours of our treasured local wildlife and
  3. begin to understand the impact Human Beings are having on our planet.

With these aims in mind, my stories are designed to tackle the following topics:

  • The link between human activity and climate change
  • Animal behaviours and the importance of their preferred habitats

I have chosen to do this through relatable characters using species which can be seen every day, across varying landscapes, gardens, towns or even in the school playground.

My books are designed to stimulate conversations about:

Planet Earth and the natural world
Climate change
Relationships between people and places
Storytelling
The consequences of our actions on the future environment

Supporting Material

To help support Teachers and Librarians, I have prepared the following free seasonal worksheets which I hope will encourage developing skills around:

  • Reading
  • Writing
  • Art

Lizzie’s Lessons

One of the things I enjoy most about being an Author is having the opportunity to tell my stories and stimulate positive reactions from my audiences. While my stories and lesson plans below are designed primarily for middle grade readers, I would love to work with all ages and community groups to inspire a love of the natural world.

1 hour Zoom session – £80.00 plus the cost of signed books and postage.

A typical session would be focused on the story, the art of creating a good story and the environmental theme:

10 mins – Focusing the class – Wildlife today, what does it mean to everyone?  Setting the scene into the future.

15 mins – Storytelling from one of the books

10 mins – Reflection on the story, discussing what they think might happen next, the characters and how they feel about the world around them.

10 mins – Discussion – What makes a good story?  What is the process you might go through to create your own story?

15 mins – Follow-up work for the class: Create your own story planners which will provide a backbone for future stories. Look, for example, at aspects such as:

  • Setting the scene, environment and feel
  • How to plot the book
  • Start, middle and ending options

  • Discussion time about the story, relationships in the book, the environment and the future of a changing world.
  • Discovering the wildlife around – This would include counting and identification skills.
  • Creative time – Writing about or drawing those things we find.
  • Follow up work – Helping story plan ahead

Indoor lessons are available if the weather is unkind, or space doesn’t allow.
